About this tour

Experience a 3-day Mount Kenya trek from Nairobi via the Naru Moru route, with trekking through montane forest, bamboo, giant heather, moorland and the Teleki Valley. The trek includes an ascent to Point Lenana (4,985 mts) for a pre-dawn summit attempt and sunrise.

Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Met Station (3,040 mts)
Leave Nairobi at 08:00 hrs for a drive to the Naru Moru Park Gate. The drive normally takes 3 hours. Have a picnic lunch at the gate.

From the gate, trek through magnificent montane forest, bamboo and giant heather before reaching Met Station (3,040 mts). The trek takes 3–4 hours. A short hike will be taken in the afternoon to help acclimatization. Dinner and overnight at the cabins, Met Station.

Day 2: Met Station – Mackinders Camp (4,300 mts)
After breakfast, start your 6–7 hour hike to Mackinders Camp. You will emerge at the edge of the forest, from where you hike across the marshy vertical bog of the lower moorlands.

The hike offers a gentle climb through fascinating vegetation with a nice perspective of the background. Have a picnic lunch on the way before proceeding to the spectacular Teleki Valley, dotted with Lobelias, arriving at Mackinders Camp (4,300 mts) late in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Mackinders Camp.

Day 3: Ascend Point Lenana
Pre-dawn start at 3:00 am for the summit attempt. Trek up steep screes and a bare rocky track to reach Point Lenana (4,985 mts) in time for sunrise and enjoy the majestic scenery. Kilimanjaro is usually visible on a clear day to the south.

After sunrise, descend to Mackinders Camp for breakfast and later descend through the moorland and bamboo forest to the gate for pick-up.
